Art Nouveau villa of Desireé and her Nolte dream kitchen

Modern kitchen with an island and dark cabinets, lit by a chandelier. Nolte Kitchens.

I am Desireé (@madame.rosa.gioia), 34 years old and a social scientist. In addition to my academic work, I appreciate being practically active and therefore gladly support my partner in the family business, where we realize garden dreams together (@DeinGartenraum). I am particularly fascinated by branding, aesthetics, and the selection of perennials – it's a lovely contrast and a creative addition to my profession. With our two children, we enjoy life between the city and nature, which gives us plenty of opportunities to combine our passions for science, gardening and family.

A home with history – modern thinking, creatively lived.

You live in your own villa, what inspired you to buy and renovate it? And when did you begin renovating?
Through a real estate portal, we discovered the house built in 1905 in 2020, and already at the first viewing we fell in love with all its individual details and the fascinating history of the house. I'd always dreamed of a house with historic charm, and when our search seemed almost hopeless, I jokingly asked my partner if we couldn't simply build a new house that looked old. Luckily, patience prevailed, and we eventually began renovations in 2021.

Are you renovating yourselves, or do you have some service providers assisting you?
We're predominantly doing the work ourselves. However, for jobs such as electrical tasks and roof insulation, we bring in professionals. Filling the walls, tiling the bathrooms, and sanding down the wooden floorboards are tasks we've handled ourselves. We greatly enjoy doing this and it simultaneously saves a lot of costs.

When will your renovation be completed?
This probably won't happen any time soon. We have already renovated a number of rooms, such as those in the living area and the bedrooms, but still planned are a large bathroom, a guest room, as well as the entire hallway and also parts of the garden. Meanwhile, we approach the projects patiently and in a well-structured manner and are happy that we will not run out of work anytime soon.

How would you describe your interior design style in your villa?
I would describe our style as modern-eclectic. We like to set color accents here and there, and also integrate handcrafted furniture or heirlooms. Therefore, modern elements can be found here along with references to the history of the house. Neutral colors form the foundation – bright walls and wooden floors as well as wooden doors. The overall impression can best be described as classic yet playful, balancing modern simplicity and nostalgic charm. Our garden, meanwhile, definitely combines Italian and Mediterranean influences.

GlossaryModern Vintage – does that even go together?

Absolutely! The Modern Vintage style combines nostalgic charm with contemporary design – and that's precisely what makes it so appealing. Here, classical elements such as antique furniture, playful wallpapers or traditional tiles meet modern colors, minimalist forms and current materials. This combination creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere without appearing old-fashioned. Whether in the kitchen, bathroom or living room – Modern Vintage allows you to stylishly showcase cherished objects with history while ensuring clean lines and functional layouts. The best part: the style is versatile and leaves plenty of room for individuality. So anyone looking to blend personality with style is hitting exactly the right note with Modern Vintage.

Kitchen planning without wall cabinets – airy, modern, different

Open, light and contemporary: More and more people are consciously deciding against wall cabinets in kitchen design. What initially sounds bold turns out to be a real design advantage – especially in smaller spaces or open floor plans. A kitchen without wall cabinets not only appears more spacious but also impresses with its clear lines and modern look. Find out here why this trend is so popular and what advantages it offers.

Does your interior also reflect your character?
Absolutely. Our home reflects our many interests and our style – versatile, vibrant, and open to new ideas. We love designing the spaces flexibly, so the home grows with us.

What inspired you to choose this interior style?
I think, on one hand, our love for creativity and versatility inspired us: artworks for the walls arise from the interest in painting; or the idea and execution of building our own dining table. This creates a distinctive look that reflects our diverse interests. Additionally, cultural influences play an important role, for example in the exterior design. We greatly appreciate Mediterranean and Italian aesthetics because they create a warm, inviting atmosphere and often utilize natural materials.

Your kitchen has no wall cabinets, why is that and what do you particularly like about this feature?
This emphasizes the spaciousness of our rooms' high stucco ceilings, giving us an airy and modern look.

How did you come to choose a kitchen from Nolte in this style?
Again, we consciously chose to embrace color and integrated modern elements, while still drawing inspiration from the symmetry of the living and dining areas.

Did you plan your kitchen yourselves or have it planned?
We approached the kitchen planner with quite precise ideas. She found our ideas refreshing and said that it was enjoyable for her, as it was an unusual and not everyday planning.

What was the most enjoyable part for you in planning or choosing the kitchen?
We planned almost exclusively drawers, and the prospect of having so much storage space was absolutely fantastic during the planning. During the planning, we could also accommodate an elevated installation for both oven and dishwasher – absolute luxury.  A highlight during planning was, of course, also deciding on the elements that are visible in the end. Fronts, color, handles – this makes planning tangible because you can touch everything.

Classic stucco elements, a heavy wooden table and modern lights combine old and new in a stylish way.

Does the lighting in the kitchen play an important role for you?
Yes. We have both a large ceiling lamp as well as a table lamp on the countertop, another one in the room and two wall lamps. Depending on the lighting conditions and activities, these five lights can be combined incredibly beautifully.

A bright countertop and dark fronts in country style, why did you choose this combination?
Here we can again emphasize the balance between modern elegance and traditional comfort – a contrast of styles that we simply cannot and do not want to decide between. In our opinion, this combination perfectly balances freshness and comfort. The bright countertop adds brightness and lightness to the kitchen, making the room appear more inviting and spacious. The dark fronts bring depth and warmth into the room, creating a lovely contrast with the countertop and enhancing the sense of coziness and groundedness.

What is the most important function in your kitchen for you?
I think the most important "function" is the open view into the dining room and the living room, which allows us to participate in activities and stay in contact with family or guests while cooking. Or keep an eye on the kids ;) That way, the kitchen becomes a central gathering place where we don't only cook, but also spend time together. The open floor plan creates an inviting atmosphere and connects the spaces so that cooking becomes less isolated and much more sociable.

What does life in the kitchen mean to you?
For us, this means that the kitchen is not just a functional workspace, but rather a place centered around communication and community. Sometimes we turn up the radio here and dance as a family of four :) (also fits directly with question 14 or could be integrated there)

What were three must-haves you absolutely had to have in your kitchen?
1.       A dishwasher with storage space directly above it for daily dishes
2.       A refrigerator with ice cube function
3.       A kitchen island (in a T-shape) for social cooking

Your kitchen looks very neat and tidy, do you have any tips for interior organization to make optimal use of the available space?
While I'm not exactly the best person to ask about organization in general, it helps me enormously that we have almost exclusively drawers instead of classic cabinets. As a result, we have a good overview and easy access to everything. Each drawer in our kitchen has a defined purpose: for example, one drawer for canned goods, one for baking utensils, one for storage containers, and one exclusively for spices. Due to this clear structure, everything stays in place and we save time searching for things.

Floral wallpapers, dark wood, and lovingly selected details create a playful retreat with vintage charm for the little ones.

Should your kitchen be more practical in everyday life, or was design the main focus?
A clever design that is practically thought out makes it easy to organize everything well while also creating an inviting atmosphere. Our kitchen combines both by providing storage space, being functionally thought-out and at the same time really appealing to us visually.

Is interior fitting just as important as external appearance?
The external appearance is obviously the first thing you notice, but good internal organization significantly improves usability and helps maintain a tidy and harmonious kitchen.

Which space in your home is your favorite and why?
This isn't easy, but I think our large table in the dining room is my favorite place. It's bright, sunlight comes in beautifully or when it becomes colder, the fire burns right beside it in the stove. Here we work, paint, study, eat and talk. It is the centerpiece of our living area and there is always action here.

What are your three most important tips for household management?
1.       Family First: For us, family comes first. It is important to consciously set aside time for shared experiences with the children – whether it is spending time outdoors in the garden or playing a game together. When in doubt, household chores can wait, because such moments are priceless and memorable, unlike having a dust-free home.
2.       Everything should have its place: Clear organization makes tidying up much easier. When everything – from stuffed animals to vases – has a fixed place, things are easier to find and rooms can be quickly put in order.
3.       Division of tasks: Sharing household tasks among ourselves reduces stress enormously. The 5Mi creates a good team feeling and saves time that can then be used again for beautiful moments.
