Between equestrian sports and family life: Michael and Faye create their cosy home in the Black Forest

Michael Jung (@michaeljungofficialnews) is a multiple Olympic champion in eventing. With his wife Faye Füllgraebe (@faye4.4.21), who is an animal physiotherapist, he shares not only a passion for equestrian sports, but also a cozy apartment at the Jung riding school property in the Black Forest. Recently, the pair renovated the upper floor of the riding stables in Horb-Altheim. Michael and Faye share more about themselves and their home in the following interview.

Michael, tell us briefly about your farm, the house, and how it came about that you expanded the upper floor of the riding stable.
The farm has been my home for as long as I can remember. We moved here shortly after my birth. The building effectively became a multi-generational house. My grandparents, who unfortunately have since passed away, used to live upstairs. To me, the farm means home. Here, I’m in my element. My father, who himself competed very successfully in tournaments, established the riding facility and trained me from an early age. To this day, we run the riding school as a family business. Faye also comes from a family passionate about riding. She moved in with me in 2013. We are connected not only by eventing, but also by the work here in the stable. As an independent animal physiotherapist, Faye cares for our more than 30 horses, among other duties. At the end of November, Faye and I got engaged. The renovation of the upper floor fits perfectly into this new stage in our lives. We would like to redesign our home for our shared future.

What wishes and preferences influenced the style of your apartment?
Upstairs, you could still clearly see the taste of another generation who had arranged and built things differently. After the death of my grandparents, I left it as it was initially. But eventually it became time for a renovation. The apartment needed to become overall more modern and contemporary. For us, this included, for example, an open living area and brighter colors.

Kitchen and living area are designed openly. Was this already the case before?
No, we just remodeled it now. We wanted it more open and spacious, with flowing transitions. That fits better with the modern lifestyle and the fact that you do spend a lot of time in the kitchen, but you don't want to isolate yourself there for cooking; you also want to meet over a coffee. So the room had to be as inviting and comfortable as possible.

What priority does the kitchen have in your home?
We enjoy cooking and are very sociable. Therefore, the kitchen is a sort of central gathering place for us. It's the perfect spot for conversations and cozy evenings. I think we'll be spending a lot of time here with family and friends. I'm already looking forward to it very much.

What was absolutely essential in your kitchen? What was especially important to you?
People used to gather around the "heimischen Herd" before, and for us it is exactly the same. Stove and oven were key elements in our planning. Like everything else in our kitchen, the appliances and related working heights are individually tailored to us. This makes us feel comfortable and we will have a lot of enjoyment.

Timeless design for modern living spaces

Clear lines, reduced forms and a well-thought-out design make this kitchen the stylish focal point of everyday life. High-quality materials and a minimalist look create a calm, modern atmosphere – functional, aesthetic and durable.

Did you have to consider anything special when planning the kitchen? The building is probably quite old, right?
The house is now about 40 years old. When we removed the wall to create an open floor plan, a steel beam was installed for stabilization. We had to take that into account. The planning was also adjusted to the individual conditions of the space. However, we were quite free in the design.

The kitchen island has an integrated counter. For the quick snack in between, when things have to move fast, or are you more the connoisseurs when it comes to eating?
That entirely depends on the time of day. In the morning and at lunchtime we're usually quite busy. Then things have to move fast. The counter is ideal for having a coffee or eating a small meal during the break.

Downdraft extractor, laterally integrated wine cooler, handleless fronts and clean lines speak for a modern and clean design. What inspired you to this style in your kitchen?
We initially browsed a lot on the Internet. We also flipped through plenty of catalogues. In that way, we already had a pretty good idea of what we liked. Ultimately decisive, however, was the professional and friendly advice from our kitchen planner, who created a kitchen from the many ideas that fits us perfectly.

Fronts in cement look combined with wooden elements – this brings warmth into the kitchen-living area. Is the kitchen a retreat for you after stressful working days?
It definitely is and certainly the nicest place in the apartment.

Is it difficult for you to unwind, considering you live on a farm with a lot of hustle and bustle? What helps you to relax?
It is not that hard to switch off. We enjoy our life as it is. After all, we both don’t know it otherwise and love what we do. Furthermore, here in the Black Forest and near the Neckar we have a wonderful landscape. We get to live where others go on vacation!

Between all your training, traveling and appointment hustle, do you still have time to enjoy your own four walls?
There actually remains little time. We are very often on the move. Therefore, it’s even more important to have a place where you can calm down and relax. Completely in line with the motto “Zuhause ist es doch am schönsten!”

„Home is simply the nicest place!“

How did you come across Nolte Küchen?
Through our riding colleague Marcus Ehning, who has maintained a long-standing relationship with Nolte Küchen. His successful mare „Noltes Küchengirl“ is practically legendary... Before that, we hadn't really explored the topic of kitchens much. So Marcus's suggestion provided a great starting point.

What does „life in the kitchen“ mean to you?
The kitchen is a place of enjoyment. Here, you can prepare and eat whatever you're in the mood for. That's not always possible when you're on the go. Especially at tournaments, you're dependent on catering. But at home, we can cook according to our mood—not only for ourselves but also for family and friends who will definitely bring our kitchen to life! Here we can do whatever we like, simply unwind and relax.

The Olympic Games are coming up in 2021. Michael, as a successful eventing rider, do you have to follow a special nutrition plan? Does that affect your cooking habits?
Weight, nutrition and fitness are of course important. But I have already internalized that to such an extent that it doesn’t particularly influence my cooking habits. We simply eat healthily and balanced.

Which one of you cooks the most?
That would definitely be Faye!

Have you ever made something for your horses in the kitchen too? For example, recipes for treats or similar?
Of course! Didn’t we say we cook for family and friends? :)
