Simple elegance on the outside and a true organisational talent on the inside

A modern kitchen with a white island and stainless steel appliances, Nolte Kitchen.

My name is Jacqueline, I am 26 years old, come from a small village in the beautiful Lahn-Dill region and live together with my husband in a condominium. We have already been living here since February 2017 and in summer 2020 we started expanding and renovating the apartment. The renovation work took about a year and we did almost everything ourselves.  Of course, there are always some little things missing (and it will probably always stay that way, as new ideas always come up), but we are really very happy in our own four walls.

Minimalistic and stylish on the outside – thoughtfully designed down to the last detail on the inside: Jacqueline shows how design, organisation and functionality can form a unity.

Why did you decide on an entirely black kitchen?
For me, it was clear from the beginning how the kitchen should look. I wanted white fronts and a dark worktop. For me, this is modern and timeless.

Your kitchen has no visible handles, why is that, and what do you particularly like about it?
I deliberately decided against handles. I find it beautiful when the individual white fronts of the doors and drawers are without "interruption," therefore presenting a uniform front. Handles were actually never an option for me.

On Instagram, you mentioned that you already had your kitchen in mind before planning. Where did you find inspiration and why did you have such clear ideas early on?
Above all, I got inspired through Instagram and Pinterest. I looked at many kitchens and, while browsing through my favorites, I repeatedly noticed white kitchens with a dark worktop.

What were challenges during the renovation?
In fact, there was a minor difficulty when installing the kitchen: The connection for the sink was not in the exact correct position, so that a plumber had to stop by on the day of installation and move the connection for us.

The dark countertop is a nice contrast to the bright fronts, why did you choose a dark countertop?
I also find the contrast very beautiful. When planning the kitchen, I also already considered a matching dining table and chairs, and I came up with the color dark gray, thus it became clear that the countertop should also be kept in this shade. In addition, you don't immediately see every stain *zwinker*.

Why was a kitchen island so important to you?
I have always dreamt of a kitchen island. I think it's great that you have additional workspace as well as storage space and at the same time you can also sit on the other side with bar stools.

GlossaryWhat is Modern Scandi Minimalism?

This kitchen combines the lightness of Scandinavian style with the clarity of modern design. Light fronts, handleless surfaces and a dark worktop create a calm, harmonious overall look. Subtle accessories made of glass, ceramics and natural materials add homely touches and give the room a warm, inviting atmosphere – minimalist, functional and timelessly beautiful.

Did you plan your kitchen yourself?
I planned the kitchen myself beforehand. I knew all measurements, where the hob, oven and dishwasher should be placed and where each cabinet stands. I tried to draw all this up and then took these plans with us to the kitchen studio. There, it was only about the details and the exact colour selection. By the way, the kitchen planner was very impressed by my preliminary planning.

What did you enjoy most about the planning?
I always say: anticipation is the greatest joy, and that's exactly what I felt during the planning. I generally enjoy planning anyway, and then, additionally knowing: You're currently planning your own dream kitchen. That was a really lovely feeling.

What challenges did you face during your planning and what was particularly important to you?One challenge was that we had a predetermined space where I had to plan the kitchen. I had to take into consideration that there were doors and a passageway directly next to the kitchen units. Especially important to us during the kitchen planning was that it would be a Nolte kitchen. Friends and family had only reflected positive experiences with your kitchens.

What were three must-haves that absolutely had to be in your kitchen?
We didn't have a dishwasher in our old and small kitchen. So a dishwasher was an absolute must-have. We also planned for it to be at knee height, which is very comfortable for loading and unloading.
In addition, it was important to me that the faucet at the sink could be pulled out, making it easier to rinse everything thoroughly (unfortunately, some dishes still need to be washed by hand). The sink itself should also not be very large, so that not much workspace would be lost.
Another must-have was that the oven would not be placed underneath the cooktop, but rather separately and at a comfortable working height.

The colors white and black are rather subtle. Do you like to play with colors in kitchen decoration or do you prefer to keep it more muted here as well?
Generally, I prefer to keep the colors somewhat muted; personally, I find it quite nice when everything is simple and clean. Probably the only deviating color is green, in the form of plants and flowers.

Everything in perfect order – clever interior organisation for your kitchen

Order starts on the inside: With carefully designed pull-outs, inserts, and storage solutions, your kitchen becomes not only more beautiful but also more functional. Cutlery, spices, supplies, and kitchen utensils each find their designated place – clearly arranged, within reach, and stylishly organized. Cooking becomes twice as enjoyable.

On Instagram you say the kitchen is your favorite area in your home, why is that?
I am so happy with our kitchen that I enjoy spending time there. It's a place to review the day's events together, and where we simply sit together as a family and enjoy the time. It's also really nice to cook together in the kitchen.

What is the most important feature in your kitchen for you?
I would say that's the electrical appliances. On the one hand, we have an induction stove that I would never want to do without again. It’s amazing how quickly water boils in a pot. Then – as previously described – the dishwasher. I'm really happy I don't have to wash all the dishes by hand any longer. And as for our oven, I love the self-cleaning function.

On Instagram you can see in your cupboards that everything is perfectly organized. Which tips do you have regarding interior organization?
I think it's important first to establish a basic order. This might initially take some time, but afterwards it's much easier to maintain this established order. Among other things, I've oriented myself towards the concept from The Home Edit. Empty everything out, clean the cupboards, form groups of things that belong together, sort them into storage boxes, and of course label them.

What's the story behind #jacquelinesvasenmittwoch?
I love vases. I've even counted them once, there are 52, and I've already ordered one more. On Instagram, there's the #vasenmittwoch, which I've always used, posting a vase photo every Wednesday. Eventually, I created my own hashtag, #jacquelinesvasenmittwoch. This way, I can not only inspire others, but also be inspired myself by people using this hashtag, as the posts appear for me and I then share them in my story.

How would you describe your apartment and decorating style?
I’d say I am very clean. I do have quite a bit of decoration, but only select pieces that harmonize with the rest of my interior. I love the color white, which is reflected in every room. All the walls are white, most of the furniture is white. I then try to introduce a bit of color (not too much) through individual pieces.

Does your character reflect your interior?Definitely. I've always been a very neat and organized person, and that’s exactly what you'll find in our home. Every closet and drawer is tidy, and even a "normal cleaning day" takes me about 6 hours, but I enjoy taking care of the apartment and keeping it orderly.

What does life in the kitchen mean to you?
I love it. I am happy to have such a beautiful and large kitchen, that's not something to be taken for granted.
