As colourful as life

Cosy, colourful & full of love – Katrin's colourful kitchen between vintage charm and family happiness

I am Katrin (@_colorfulhome_), 38 years young, Visual Merchandising Manager, mom of two adorable girls, married, coffee lover and décor addict. My great passion is colors, flowers, vintage stuff, decorative bits and pieces and cosy living. My inspirations have all sprung from our home, which my husband Sven and I built in 2017 and where our girls Marlene & Klara and we have found our home. Every day full of love, every day different, and every day filled with color. In 2019, we fulfilled our dream of owning a caravan on the Baltic Sea and since then, we have been passionate glampers. Until we can permanently live at the Baltic Sea, we continue to enhance our home in the countryside between Hamburg and Bremen. Today I'll show you our kitchen. Come along 😊.

What tips do you have for integrating colorful decorative elements into a room?
Always choose elements in combination with the wall colors. I usually select elements that blend perfectly with the colors of the room.

How can you bring more color into the kitchen?
I love colorful accessories like vases, flowers, towels or ceramics. These can easily be replaced, allowing you to restyle according to any color story. I am a big fan of a highlight wall and posters, which can be quickly exchanged.

Which colors do you think can be combined particularly well?
Yellow, yellow & yellow 😉. Add a light purple and a little pink. Together, these colors appear warm and vivid. I like that very much. In addition, I have always loved the combination with copper. Green is always present through plants and fresh flowers, bringing in naturalness & freshness.

You love colours, but your kitchen itself ended up rather simple. Why is that?
That's a very interesting question 😉. When we were in the interior planning phase, we initially wanted a kitchen in taupe and high gloss. But at the final planning appointment, I had already decided on all interior colours and the rest of the furnishings. With our overall design concept and our flooring, the bright kitchen combined with the countertop particularly appealed to me. It has a calm appearance and easily adapts to all my new colour ideas again and again.

Where does your inspiration come from?
I have been decorating my whole life already 😊, it has always been my passion, and over 20 years ago, I trained as a visual merchandiser. My mind is always full of new ideas, and I often gather additional inspiration from magazines, my girls, nature, or Instagram.

With colours, you can also do a lot wrong, right? How do you make sure your decor doesn't look messy?
I definitely think so. Everyone has favourite colours or a colour concept for their home and should live by it. Nevertheless, you should be mindful of colour effects and not use too many different main colours. I often rely on colour nuances and repeatedly use the same colours. It looks „orderly“ and coherent in our home, because our colour concept runs through every room and the whole house.

What's your favourite colour and how have you integrated it into your home?
That's clearly yellow. I love the warmth, vibrance and good mood it radiates. I've painted some accent walls yellow and have many home accessories, such as vases, candles & pictures as well as home textiles, which I combine in different ways.

You're super creative and enjoy crafts. Have you already implemented DIY’s in your kitchen?
I guess I'll have to get around to it :). So far, I have only redesigned the small coat rack. I've painted it and added furniture knobs.

Would taking a colourful front have been an option as well?
Definitely. There are so many incredibly great colours, fronts and fittings available. If I could, I would conjure up a different kitchen every month :).

Do you cook as colourful and extraordinary as you decorate?
We cook very consciously, with fresh ingredients from regional farms. Right now it's not really extraordinary. Our two girls prefer "very normal" dishes like mashed potatoes with carrots, vegetable casserole or milk rice pudding.

Looking back, do you have any tips on what to consider when planning a kitchen?
We taped the dimensions of the cooking island on the floor beforehand, to check if there was enough space around it. I would do that again every time.
Having sufficient light was very important to me, as well as not too many wall cabinets and a kitchen cabinet front in the HWR. We had the narrow "Check Out "window installed to be able to see the sunset in the evenings and look out into the garden while working in the kitchen.

Joy of colour with finesse – setting accents for your home

With small colour accents, every kitchen becomes a real feel-good place. Whether colourful vases, coloured dishes or cushions in soft shades – when used purposefully, colours bring personality and warmth into the home. Even a single splash of colour can redefine the style.

What should never be missing in your kitchen?
The cooking island with counter, sorted drawers, handmade ceramics, flowers, vases, coffee & music.

You built your house in 2017, which tips would you have wished for beforehand and would you now pass on to others?
We had very good support and guidance, which is certainly the best thing that can happen to you. That's something I would pay attention to again and again. Professional work should also be done by specialists. Visualizing everything in advance helps incredibly, and planning is everything 😊.

You have a really beautiful flower meadow next to your house!  And generally, there are many flowers to be found in your feed. What do they mean to you and what role do they play in your decor?
I simply love flowers. They have a natural wonderful beauty that often looks like a painting. They add a special effect to every room and you can do many different things with them. The flower meadow is a dream. Our local community has seeded these in many green spaces and it's simply wonderful.

What's behind the #vasenmove?
I started my feed in November last year. We had been at home for almost half a year due to Corona, and there were no meetings, parties etc. It was the same for everyone at home. When I gathered all the vases and wanted to take a new picture, I thought about everyone who was at home like me, and found it a beautiful idea to show connection and invite everyone on Instagram to a "Vasenmove".

What does life in the kitchen mean to you?
I spend a lot of time here and it's a haven, meeting place & heart of the home. We have an open living area, and often I'm busy in the kitchen and can easily keep an eye on the girls in the living area. We often eat at the counter, talk about our day, or drink coffee.

Do your children already enjoy cooking? The older one is 6 years old and happily helps when it involves cake, pudding or pizza 😊. The little one just turned 1 and currently wants to try everything.
