Between dream home and interior passion

A modern kitchen with a black countertop and island, designed by Nolte Kitchen.

Hey, I'm Kim. Some of you might already know me as kim_terieur on Instagram. I'm a mom of 2 boys, have been living together with my husband for 17 years, and 4 years ago we built our dream house.

Kim shares her interior passion and shows how to create a real dream home with a sense of style and character.

What inspired you to share your interior journey on Instagram with others?
I started with interior on Instagram rather out of boredom. At the time when I began posting more actively, I had 294 followers (I will never forget that number).

Do you consider Instagram as your hobby or do you see it as your professional occupation?
I would be lying now if I said it's just a hobby. A few good things have already come out of it, allowing us to go on holiday more often than usual. Nevertheless, I still do it because I really enjoy interacting with people, inspiring them, and of course also drawing inspiration from others myself.

What made you choose a classic white-black combination for your kitchen design?
I, or rather we, wanted a kitchen that is stylish but also timeless. That's how I came up with the idea of mixing black & white, but also the combination of matte fronts paired with high-gloss fronts is very appealing in my opinion, and yet it still looks simple, so you can easily work with accessories.

The black kitchen island with the attached bar is definitely an eye-catcher in your kitchen. How did you come up with this extraordinary idea?
It has always been my dream to have a kitchen with a seating area. During my childhood, we always had very small kitchens that weren't inviting enough for you to sit down and chat with the cook while the meal was being prepared. I really enjoy simply sitting there sometimes and looking out of the windows.

A kitchen island is a place of communication; is it an important spot in your home?
Our entire kitchen is the heart of the home. Whether you're standing in the driveway looking through the large windows, sitting at the dining table, or strolling through the garden, the kitchen is visible from everywhere. It simply had to be perfect. I think we succeeded quite well.

Did you plan your kitchen yourself or did you have it planned at the kitchen studio?
Back then, we went to a kitchen studio in Kirchlengern. However, at that time I already knew exactly what the kitchen should look like. But the specialist preferred to handle the final touches of the planning.

Can style also be cosy?

Definitely – when clear lines meet warm materials. Dark accents, light wooden floors and subtle colors create a modern living atmosphere with character. The combination of minimalism and cozy ambience ensures a harmonious home that appears both understated and inviting.

Which kitchen design trends inspire you the most at the moment?
To be honest, I'm not really familiar with trends. I simply do what I like and think is good. You don't always have to go with the flow.

What three main aspects are particularly important to you when it comes to planning your kitchen? What were the three must-haves that absolutely had to be integrated into your kitchen?
The kitchen island for sure. In addition, I definitely wanted the integrated downdraft extractor in the hob. It was also very important to me that the sink is installed flush with the work surface.

Your kitchen is planned without wall cabinets, why did you decide to do this?
Why don't we have wall cabinets? Quite simply, I'm far too small to comfortably reach them without using a stool. Also, I liked the idea with the large windows so much that we happily decided to do without wall cabinets.

What challenges did you have to overcome while planning your open-plan kitchen? Which aspects were particularly easy and which particularly difficult?
None at all. The only thing we really wanted back then was for the living room to be visually & acoustically separated a bit from the kitchen. That's why we planned the turn-around-the-corner to access the living room.

You have chosen a mix of handleless and kitchen with handles, why?
We have handles everywhere. However, they are so delicate that you probably haven't noticed them.

For you, what is the charm of an open kitchen or why did you choose one?
Because we love "open-plan living." I like the light, and the spaciousness of the rooms.

Are there specific decorations or personal touches in your kitchen that hold special meaning for you?
Yes. The sketch-style images of our children. I especially like those. They are so beautifully simple, yet special. You can't imagine how often I've held the kids next to them to relive memories. They used to be sooo small.

Which aspects were particularly important to you when building your house? What advice would you give others who want to create a nicer and cozier home?
Gather lots of inspiration. Stay true to your style. And the most important thing: Do your own thing and don't let anyone interfere. You have to feel comfortable & live there, no one else.

Could you describe your kitchen in just three words?
Clean, modern, elegant.

You play with a versatile mix of materials in your home – how do you manage to make the combination harmonious, and what tips would you give to people thinking about a mix of materials in their home?
I can't really give concrete tips. I think I just have a bit of a feeling for what fits together and what is better avoided. However, I always gladly help friends when they want my opinion on their ideas.

Can you describe to us how you would describe your home and your interior style? Does the decor reflect your character?
Definitely. The house is my baby:) I do think it reflects me very well; I'm cool, robust, minimalist, and I like wearing black:)
