Bringing things to life with plenty of creativity

Rosemarie is an architect from Hannover. She loves expressing her creativity through her profession and bringing things to life in apartments and houses. Furthermore, she regularly inspires her followers on her Instagram channel @live.like.archi with tips and lifehacks related to architecture, building, styling, and interior design. We got the chance to see how the architect herself lives during a tour through her house.
What does architecture mean to you?
In my opinion, architecture is an incredibly wonderful profession where you can express yourself very creatively and continuously discover something new in the many different projects. I simply love designing and drawing things and then seeing the whole thing come to life.
When did you realise that creativity is a part of your life?
Very early on, because as a child I was very creative. I enjoyed painting and constantly rearranging my room. Even back then, I thought that was great! I always wished we had another house somewhere that I could furnish from scratch. As a child, that idea already excited me.
When you started your career, was it already clear that architecture would be the field for you?
Not necessarily from the beginning, as after school I initially didn't really know which direction to take. Then, at first, I tried studying economics, but quickly realised it was much too dry and mathematically oriented for me. After one semester, I switched to architecture, and I enjoyed it immensely. And when you do something with passion, it will also turn out well!
You took over an older home and completely renovated it with your family. How did you approach this very important project?
Together with my husband, who is also an architect, I planned everything myself. We completely remodeled a house from the 60s. Looking at the before-and-after comparison, you can hardly believe it's still the same house. We had to comply with many regulations beforehand and adhere to the development plan, which naturally limited our planning somewhat. However, the style of the house now absolutely reflects my personal taste. I like it minimalistic with a touch of coziness. It shouldn't feel too cold, which is why I work a lot with wood. You will hardly find any colorful furniture or decorative objects in our home, except for a few eye-catchers—and in the garden, because there the flowers can certainly be as colorful as possible. Another very important aspect in furnishing the interior is lighting. With lighting, you can create a wonderful atmosphere in a room, but, on the other hand, also completely ruin it if used incorrectly. For that reason, it was especially important for me to carefully plan the lighting and use it atmospherically.

How do you create balance for yourself, where can you best unwind?
I have always been very ambitious and did a lot of sports as a child; at age 15, for example, I was German champion in hip hop. Today, sport is still a big and important part of my life. I love playing badminton and use the activity to blow off steam and clear my head. Even when I have a lot to do, sports help me unwind very effectively, and afterwards I always feel great!
What are your favourite places in Hannover?
My "favorite place" in Hannover is the Maschsee with the new Rathaus; it is a very beautiful place. When the Maschsee Fest takes place in Hannover, this area has an especially unique atmosphere and attracts many visitors from other cities to Hannover. This is always a very special highlight. Architecturally speaking, there are surely cities with more beautiful buildings; however, the structural style of the Nordelbe is truly unique.
And by whom are you particularly inspired?
Zaha Hadid is a great role model for me. Especially because, as a woman, she made a big name for herself in the architecture world. It is worthwhile to take a closer look at her extraordinary, sometimes crazy designed spaces. Additionally, I would like to see the architectural works in Dubai someday, as there are particularly remarkable buildings there, including the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world.
Let's talk about creativity. What does it mean to you?
For me, creativity means my head is always buzzing with ideas. There are so many ideas in my head that sometimes I don't know what to do with them! I really love doing DIY projects because they allow you to express yourself and save money on top of it. It's simply something different compared to going into a store and buying a finished product. My children love it when I've handcrafted something that they can then proudly display. It's wonderful when your own children are proud of you!
Your home integrates a utility room, among other things. What was especially important to you when designing this room?
For the utility room that I planned together with Nolte Küchen, I initially wanted black fronts combined with wood tones. But then, when I went to the Nolte Forum in Löhne, I fell in love with a white kitchen that was complemented by wooden fronts and knew: that's exactly how my room should look! Electrical appliances such as washing machine and dryer absolutely had to be installed at body height so that one doesn’t have to bend down as frequently. Additionally, a sink was really important to me, as well as pull-out drawers for laundry baskets, which considerably ease the workload.
Have you ensured the utility room matches the style of your home?
Yes, absolutely! You can clearly see that the room integrates very well into the overall concept of the house because we've used a lot of wood and bright colours. And exactly these details can also be found in our utility room. The entire area simply matches our style perfectly!

You have by now established yourself as an influencer, numerous followers have subscribed to your channel. How do you balance social media with your work as an architect?
Until almost a year ago, I was still working full-time as an architect and doing Instagram on the side. Meanwhile, creating my content has taken up so much time that both things can no longer be combined well. Since social media also gives me an incredible amount of joy, I decided to work exclusively as an influencer.
In your house you have integrated, among other things, a utility room. What content can be found on your channel?
My social media account revolves around beautiful living and building. You will find a mix of designer furniture, DIY projects and affordable, second-hand items. I want to inspire people and show that beautiful things don't have to be expensive. It's great to be able to show why a space appears appealing and creates atmosphere – often it's due to the lighting and design. I like to demonstrate how you can create impressive things yourself with simple means and plenty of creativity.
Your videos, reels and your content are very lively and fun to watch. Where do you get your inspiration from?
I have been dancing and performing on many stages my whole life. That makes it very easy for me to speak into the camera and entertain people on social media. It's great when that enthusiasm transfers to my followers and I can share with them my joy of beautiful living, building and furnishing!
